E-newsletter Marketing Strategy

E-newsletter marketing is about developing relationships with customers and potential customers. Here I discuss 5 elements necessary for a successful email marketing strategy. Avoid the huge waste of time that newsletters can be plus learn how you can clearly measure the effectiveness of your efforts.

Like any relationship email marketing is give and take, two way.

Content is King (but not the only thing so don’t stop reading after this point).

What’s true about your present newsletter content?

  1. Are your newsletters full of benefits to your readers and thus welcomed to an Inbox, even looked forward to?
  2. Or, are they all about you with the implication that all you are after is a sale?  If yes, oops, a change is needed.

Newsletter can be a time sump giving little results.  I hope this post eliminates that negative experience.

You start with a solid gold list of consenting subscribers .

Now, plan your newsletter marketing strategy to consider:

  1. Timely focused topic, 3 points of benefits. Much more causes option paralysis and no action. Any more links and you chance ending up in the filtered out folder.
  2. When (seasonally at a minimum with enough lead time for people to respond)
  3. I prefer monthly to your gold opt-in list, planned sequentially over a year. Think of it like arrangements of  songs on a CD or chapters of a book.  Set a plan. It’s not haphazard.
  4. Track success of a newsletter with carefully chose links. Plan links to pages other than your homepage so you can monitor success of the newsletter.  Your traffic report will show a spike in the visitors coming into your site on that page.
  5. Write as if talking 1 to 1 to someone you know and like - personably, informally.  If you’re a professional firm you can get away with a formal authoritative tone on a print glossy newsletter but emails are personal. You need to sound personable, real, helpful.

Email marketing can be renamed relationship-marketing.  Have fun.
