SEO Ranking - Sales Hustle Warning

“You’re now on page 7 for x-product, I can get you on page 1 and increase sales in 24 hours.” If an SEO salesman rings or emails with anything like that, run. Yes, run the other way.  Page 1,time, and sales should not be promised.  In this story the tables got turned on the jerk. He left red-faced, eating humble pie.The hustler called the wrong person. She had built her website around an SEO plan I had researched for her.  She’s a satisfied client and blog reader so she knows the lingo.

She knows her keyword search phrases and monitors their ranking. So she was fully armed with evidence that he was truly full of it and told him, “my records show I’m already on page one for x-product.  I’m googling that phrase right now and see a page 1 result.” (my words…Beat that!)

Stumble, stammer, throat-clearing. “Oh yes you are indeed.” Here’s the part I like best …”Who ever had done my optimization was very good and should be congratulated.”  She then told him it was about 3 years old and she had not really changed it since.  He said the person really knows their stuff and that I have a great website!  Isn’t that nice, and hilarious.

She got the sales-hustler to go away, hat in hand after a huge complement to me! Made my day!

Mainly I’m proud of the owner who has been monitoring (okay, not frequently but keeping tabs) how she ranks for her keyword search phrases.  She knew his promises where false and sent him packing.

You might ask, so how does she keep her ranking without doing heaps over the three years.  First, individual phrases took awhile to reach that status, not 24 hours. She has added content as her product line grew. She has added distributors.  she has added photos.  Pages change. So there has been sufficient activity.  Her phrases are competitive but the base URL has the mana of three years.  Once you achieve ranking others have to be just that much better to knock you out.

Moral to the story:  knowledgeable website owners can land on their feet when up against a shylock.  Applause.
