Insights for Search Tool for Regional Keyword Popularity
My clients often wonder how popular a keyword search phrase is across regions. Do Mainlanders search for the same phrases Northlands do? The Google tool Insights for Search will tell all.
With Insights for Search by Google you can compare by search terms, locations and time ranges. You choose the search terms and then filter by country and region. For example if your target market is the US you can see the results state by state. I searched for gifts, set the filter on United States, All sub-regions, All categories, 2004 to present.
Best part of the data for me is the search terms related to the word I put in. That’s what we want to devour in our analysis to finding the most popular keyword search phrases in our target market.
Because the numbers in NZ are smaller some of my prodding resulted in Insufficient Data but that’s okay. Leave the filter to All sub-regions and All Categories. Works a dream. I was able to confirm some suspicions and got some new insights.
Warning: it’s very easy to drift into checking what your countrymen search for really, even by region. What a hoot.
If nothing else it’s a great way to spend a rainy afternoon. You can save it for August.

Sorry Kath but waste of time for Canterbury. Doesn’t even register when you go all sub regions even though it is main economic driver in country despite what Auckland thinks.
I am looking to go back overseas as NZ is for now a hick town in way it thinks.

Kath’s comments: Sorry to hear that we might be losing you. Re Google Insights, Ken remember this is a Google tool in Beta (testing). I suspect it might have a built in threshold for an unrealistic number…nothing to do with Aucklanders. I gave Insights a go for Canterbury and see that ‘accommodation’ has enough searches associated to break out data. ‘Security’ breaks out ‘internet security’ (bummer) but heaps of breakouts for ‘rugby’ with the Canterbury region selected, same as for Auckland.
