Geo Modifiers Help Improve Rank for Local Searches

Use your geographical identifier - your town or region - as part of your keyword search phrase to help you rank for local searches.

Example:  If you’re a builder working from Warkworth to Kerikeri then say so in one of your keyword search phrases.  Include the major centres you service.  Since you can’t list them all, list those with more of your likely buyers, your target market.

General keyword search phrase:   builder

Better - Specific keyword search phrase:  Residential Builder Warkworth Mangawhai Whangarei Kerikeri  or  Home Builder Rodney and Whangarei

For more examples, read my post on specific keyword search phrases for better conversion to sales. Catch the searcher who is ready to buy rather than just looking.

Now apply good SEO. It goes without saying you need to plug these keyword search phrases into the right places. Refer to my free download on SEO guidelines on my left sidebar.  If you are ready for the next step and still need some help, I offer a low cost SEO Planning Tool with case study.  Yes it’s complex but step by step you work through the process.

Here’s another source for the same message on SEO. (note the part about SEO companies can charge up to $100,000 per month…I’m in the wrong country!) Perhaps reading someone else’s words will assist your understanding. The knol section of Google is in Beta testing. It’s full of ‘units of knowledge’ that can fill your head…and time.

  1. The topic is quite trendy in the net at the moment. What do you pay attention to when choosing what to write ?

  2. Kath here: Great question. I keep up todate with Search Marketing discussions and what Google tries to deliver to searchers. The two go hand in hand. Plus I work with private clients who are always trying to get their URL onto the top page of results, expecially for local businesses. Over the last year I’ve found it easier to optimise (optimize..sorry, I figure being on Linked In and gmail you’re northern hemisphere) for specific location which makes it long-tail.
