Website of the Month November 2008 - Salamanderpoints Calculating Your Carbon Footprint

Recently I said if you are eco-anything, spread the word. Salamanderpoints does just that. Their focused content helps you calculate your personal carbon footprint. Amazing how my daily numbers added up.  Sure got my attention.

It’s my Sticky Website for November 2008. Great focused content makes it a winner.  (Don’t scold me for skipping October. I was swimming with humpbacks in Tonga and caught up in the various elections so lost track of time.)

Salamanderpoints is eco, yes, which makes it timely. The site helps us talk about a big topic in a meaningful personal way.  By looking at our own daily trail.  The FAQs give us factinos on why we should bother and all in a highly digestible manner. Commendable.

Calculate your personal carbon footprint on Salamandarpoints.

The site a winner because it’s sticky:  the site offers focused and digestible informative content with a forum facility to help us on our journey to do better. Overall it’s readable, scannable, usable, navigatable and wow-able.  Making it an awesome website.

I hear individual and household emissions account for 30-40% of all US greenhouse emissions.  I wonder what the percent is for NZ households? higher ? lower?

Who is pushing the barrow? Besides the FAQs I’d like to see a bit more on the people behind Salamanderpoints.   It’s all part of  keeping the quality of the conversation high.  As seekers of information we judge credibility and worthiness not only the amount of information but on the credentials and experience of the people promoting a position.  This would be an easy add to make it even stickier.

  2. Kia Ora Kath,

All well & good but this sort of thing has gone over the top. As the economy world wide looks headed for the overdue depression if you are going to get effective solutions that also make financial sense.
Most people do not realize it but with its new recycling system Christchurch is only doing it as it will be making money on most items. Currently unlike most areas Christchurch encourages people to use those plastic shopping bags to wrap up your paper recycling. Why? Because they use the plastic in a company the council owns to make those plastic road markers.
That is why it is good to see new government is reviewing ETS scheme.
End of the day what people want is jobs & money coming in. That was biggest issue whilst working in Iraq, the US banned many from jobs, so when insurgency comes along offering good money (to an Iraqi)to take part, people jumped at it.
So if you can create or retain jobs but in a sustainable fashion then well & good.
Personally I have being working on this with my companies, now we just need investment or few things to turn our way & it will happen.
