Legitimate reasons for having multiple domain names
If it can get you in trouble, why bother having multiple URLs (domain names). Four very good reasons. Does this sound like you?
Big dividends can come your way from using multiple domain names correctly. Please read my article about the bad juju that could come your way for using multiple domain names in the wrong way.
Why bother having multiple URLs.
- your target market customer might enter in the wrong URL because the business name is different from the website URL. Example: Michelle Webb had been using giftguru.co.nz as an email name with a previous business. Then she opened her Whangarei CBD gift shop Gifts on Rathbone. If a customer enters the name of her shop it redirects automatically to her default URL giftguru.co.nz site. Perfect redirect.
- You have a business name that is not searched for or lacks any keyword in the name. If starting from scratch I’d use the searched for word in my default name but have the business name redirect to the default URL. Use the keyword rich domain name as default and the business name as the redirect.
- Some people call you one thing but you are really something else. You own both names but one is the default. Eg xxx shop.co.nz v xxxstore.co.nz You may be surprised by the number of people who enter any ol’ name in the URL slot in hopes of getting a pertinent website. Unbelievable but true.
- People commonly misspell your URL. You need to own them both using one as default.
So don’t be scared off from buying a second or third domain name if any of these scenarios sound like you.
