Really Fast Broadband Soon
Rural New Zealand steps closer to truly fast broadband. It’s positive news for Northland to Southland in this election year. No longer is fast speed just reserved for big city folks.
By Christmas central Whangarei can think in terms of warp speed 1 gig per second, not the current 7 meg which most of us complain is less than 300kb most of the time. From the hub it then goes out (and slows down) to the rural sectors. But hey, beats dial up hands down.
A few days ago I attended a working meeting on Broadband Northland. I came away feeling real speed was at hand. The many sectors that will benefit from truly fast speed were represented. All noting plenty of work ahead as the roll out around the region is charted out.
Whangarei is getting Wave 7, the latest world class cost effective technology providing 1 gigabyte per second speeds, the fastest speeds available in New Zealand. Telstra Clear, Northpower and other industry players have been involved with the tech side.
From the provincial hubs it will be out around the region by fibre and the ‘last mile’ by whatever makes sense to the numbers (500 minimum) of users in the area. Satellite broadband makes sense for the very rural. Read the Scoop release from Bay City Communications, the south island satellite broadband provider.
So it is indeed good news. If you’ve missed some of the newspaper buzz you can read online news for more detail. No doubt there will be much much more on how the roll out will happen. Reply below if you have messages for me to take to future meetings.

Kia Ora Kath,
Just catching up as said before. This one I had to comment on. I have a vodem 3G which works off vodafone cell phone net work. Well being in Christchurch city is 3G, but speed so slow much of time or keeps cutting out. In my travels ended up in wops where it showed only dial up speed. Thought oh no. Well down load was faster & more regular than 3G was in Christchurch.
