2008 Friendship Contract Renewal

“May love stick to your face like Vaseline and may laughter assault your lips!” That’s just part of the Wish for 2008 I received from my steadfast friend.  Let me share it with you along with my thoughts on the challenge of being a friend in our business relationships.

My friend Michelle forwarded an email entitled 2008 Friendship Contract. Proof that some of those funnies circulating in cyberspace can get you thinking.

The Friendship Contact suggests the relationships we have with friends, family and I’d add even those relationships we have at work with business customers, colleagues, staff, suppliers etc etc. - all come with an unwritten contract. Afterall business happens between people not robots. We take our humanity to work, don’t we? Are we a jerk at work if we’re a jerk in private?

The question, as we start 2008, will our friendship contracts be renewed?

If all the people we came into contact with in 2007, at work and play, were given an opportunity to say yeh or nay, renew or reject Katherine’s friendship in 2008, what would they say?

 The message I received starts…

“After serious and cautious consideration,  your contract of friendship has been renewed for the New Year 2008. It was a very hard decision to make. So try not to screw it up.”

That made me laugh. Looking at it that way I can see where I  have added strain to a few of my ‘contracts’.

I ask myself, am I as kind, genuinely interested, fair, generous with time, money and expectations in both my work and private relationships? What have I missed? Food for thought.

Wait, there’s more.  Not my own words but they capture My Wish for You in 2008

“May peace break into your house and may thieves come to steal your debts. May the pockets of your jeans become a magnet for $100 bills. May love stick to your face like Vaseline and may laughter assault your lips!  May your clothes smell of success like smoking tires and may happiness slap you across your face and may your tears be that of joy. May the problems you had forget your home address. In simple words, may 2008 be the best year of your life.”

Yes, let it be a great 2008 for you. And, may this time next year, January 2009, may I be found worthy of having my contract of friendship renewed.

What contracts are you renewing? with you staff? with you web designer? with your business partners? with…?

  1. Yours is the kind of friendship I value most - we don’t physically see each other a lot, and we are both very busy in our lives, but when we do touch base it’s full of warmth and trust - so yes please, let’s renew our friednship contract!

  2. Hi Kath,

Winter is here, my life is getting some spaces to sit by the fire in the evening and catch up on things left behind in the rush of summer. What a delight to read your friendship renewal contract from Michelle and yes I would like to buy into another year of the Kath Friendship Club, it’s a privilege to know you, an hour or two with Kath is an inspiration, fun and never long enough. Don’t change. Jax
