Note from the End of the World

Glacier in El Calafate PatagoniaFrom 1 January I’ll be heading to Antarctica but not before a few days exploring Tierra del Fuego Patagonia, before boarding our cruise at Ushuaia, “The End of the World.”  I hear there are lots of tourist attractions sporting this name.

Post cards, burgers, glasses of Malbec, a train and even an outhouse at the end of the Carretera Austral, the Southern Highway that starts in Alaska and runs down the Americas until it reaches “The Outhouse at the End of the World.”

While I’ll probably get suckered into doing all the above, I have my sites set on seeing with my own two eyes the glaciers, the granite ridges and ice spires surrounding Torres del Paine, Puerto Natales, and Punta Arenas.  And perhaps a condor or two.

Guanacos wild along the water in Tierra del FuegoYou can be sure I’ll take photos of the Pumas and Guanacos, camel-like animals even those drinking Malbec at the End of the World cafe.Until then, watch the news, hope for calm weather for crossing Drakes Passage and our cruise ‘around the horn’.

Who would have guessed.  One day late 2006 I was coaching a BizNorth client, a travel agent from Kerikeri, who was planning a group to Antarctica in 15 months time. I put up my hand and said to Trixie Newton, “Let’s see if things will fall into place.  Antarctica is on the list my husband and I made back in 1981 when we set off to see the world”.

I should have paid closer attention to Mrs Lair in 5th grade geography when we studied the Straits of Magellan, but I didn’t. The little girl from Glendale California thought it was a very long way away down there at the End of the World.

Gentoo Penguin nesting in AntarcticaWho would have guessed. One day you cash in some chips from your work-life account and get some balance back.

Gentoo Penguins here I come!

Readers, what or where is on your list?

Hey you two - we’ll be thinking of you as you wander and wonder…can’t wait to see the photos when you get back. Have a wonderful time… give our regards to the penguins!

  5. From fantastic Patagonia. Have seen a Guanaco being born, 10 condors taking off from a recent puma kill in a roadside paddock…on and on. Can you hear my enthusiasm. Chilean people are warm and welcoming. Argentian Patagonia much more touristy around Calefarte. Onward to the End of the World this afternoon, to cross the straits tomorrow night. The impressive mountains and size of the glaciers will remain with me always.
